This week is the unofficial kick off to Summer, and as always we recommend getting any masonry work that may need to be done to your chimney during this warm season. Most people are preoccupied with Summer activities, pools are open, parties, lawn and gardening maintenance keep most people pretty busy and don’t think of their chimney’s problems till the heating season. Enjoy your Summer but don’t forget about your chimney, it is one of the most important parts of your home. With regular maintenance your chimney should last and perform as it is designed to for a very long time.

Spring is the best time of to take care of masonry problems on your chimney, it is also a great time to have your fireplace and wood stove flue swept to get rid of the creosote smell, and coal stoves are best serviced in the spring to get the acidic residue out of the stove and have it ready for the next heating season. Use this time to enjoy outdoor activities, get out there and just do something, weather its going for a walk in the woods or riding your bicycle, consider going to the friday night races at Big Diamond, Minersville if it’s something you’ve never done i can assure you it will be an exciting experience. before you know it it will be scorching hot outside and not long after it will cool off in the fall and then it’ll be heating season all over again. Enjoy the weather while it’s here!

This is probably the last month of the everyday burning season other than a late night fire. Most find it gets too hot in the house burning an alternative heat day and night and just choose to burn at night if it’s still a little cold. Spring is the best time to schedule your chimney to be swept for many reasons and include: getting rid of the nasty smelling creosote so you don’t smell it all summer long, chimney will be already for the next burning season, good time to service your automatic coal stove to keep sulfur from eating at the inside of your stove, make sure your cap is in satisfactory condition to keep out summer month animals, this is a good time to address any masonry problems with your chimney, such as a deteriorated crown, or poor mortar joints, and this is our slower season and we can be much more flexible with our schedule to meet yours.

Please read Carefully, as i know someone who just experienced tragedy because of this. If your using wood or coal as an alternative heat such as a wood or coal stove make sure to use a metal ash bucket with a metal lid when removing ashes and be sure to place it outside away from the house. Burning embers and coal can stay hot for a very long period of time and an uncovered plastic bucket can either burn through or wind can blow the hot ashes onto something combustible and catch the house on fire. Again, make sure to dispose of the ashes in a metal can with a metal lid and place the can outside away from the house. Be Safe, Stay Warm and have a Happy New Year.

By now you’ve probably already started burning your alternative heat source. If it’s a wood fuel your burning, (wood stove, wood insert, or fireplace) burn an anti creosote catalyst once a week to insure dangerous creosote is not building up on the flues of your chimney. These are available in several forms, (powder, liquid and prepackaged sticks that are just tossed into the fire while burning), and are available at your local stove shop and some home improvement retailers. It is important to note that some of these catalysts are not meant to burn in catalytic stoves and to closely follow the directions on the package. Don’t be fooled by the famous Chimney Sweeping Log, as well as this product does work ,IT DOES NOT TAKE THE PLACE OF SWEEPING YOUR CHIMNEY, but does keep creosote from forming to a tarry glaze. REGULAR SWEEPING AND INSPECTIONS OF YOUR VENTING SYSTEM ARE STILL RECOMMENDED ANNUALLY.

If your using coal as your alternative appliance fuel, make sure your door gaskets are all in tact and sealing tightly. a good indication of loose or missing gaskets is the smell of sulfur in your house. As with all alternative fuel burning appliances, make sure you have carbon monoxide detector in your home to detect any dangerous levels of the deadly gas should something go wrong with your venting system of that appliance.

From everyone at WELLER’S CHIMNEY SWEEPS Thank you for all your loyal patronage and have a Merry Christmas and a safe Happy New Year. Good luck to all.
